Gestalt Therapy
What is gestalt therapy?
Gestalt therapy’s focus is on the here-and-now, rather than reviewing circumstances and conditions of one’s past. It also focuses on closure of unresolved emotional issues in order to take responsibility for one’s actions rather than placing blame elsewhere. It was developed by Fritz Perls in the 1940’s and he believed that we are not here to live up to other people’s expectations, just as other people are not here to live up to ours. However, with greater awareness of ourselves as a whole – we can live healthier and fuller lives.
How does gestalt therapy work?
You will answer a variety of questions. These questions promote you to review your emotions and feelings, and to deal with life’s circumstances and challenges. Gestalt therapists often use a variety of techniques and exercises in the therapeutic process but the approach is always collaborative with their client. In this type of therapy, the therapist is not seen as an expert but an equal partner
Exercises and techniques used in gestalt therapy include:
- Role playing
- Attention to language used (focus on “I” statements)
- Pinpointing emotions
- Body language
- Play therapy
- Art therapy
The mission of gestalt therapy is to challenge you to know what makes sense within your life, to understand your present experiences and conditions, and to teach you to move forward.
When is gestalt therapy used?
Gestalt therapy helps you to become self-aware and can be used to treat a variety of mental health issues including:
- Gender identity issues
- Anxiety
- Depression
- Self-esteem issues
- Marriage and relationship concerns
This type of therapy may be used to treat other conditions and concerns in addition to those listed above. It may also be used in conjunction with other treatment methods. Your therapist will work with you to determine the best treatment method for your individual circumstances.
You should be aware that there is no treatment method that is successful for every person. What works for you, may not work for someone else.
What to expect from therapy
Put simply, you will get out of therapy what you put into it. It’s not a magic solution that will solve all your problems. It may involve you doing some real work and being completely honest with yourself and your therapist. Sometimes facing our truth is the hardest thing of all – but from that discomfort can come healing and growth.
