Sex Compulsion/OCSB Assessment

Formal assessments can help to identify your strengths and weaknesses and provide a clearer path forward for your mental health care. Insight’s trained sex therapists provide assessments that assist individuals of all ages to improve their lives or address risk or legal concerns. With the use of these assessments, we can identify areas that can help make an individual’s life better whether that’s in the area of sexual compulsion, sexual offender or violence risk assessment, or a gender assessment and referral.

What is a sex compulsion/OCSB assessment?

A sex compulsion assessment is a tool or tools used to determine whether an individual becomes obsessive or has a compulsion around sex. Approaching a professional for psychotherapy or an assessment may feel embarrassing but is an essential first step. Below is a sexual self-assessment that you can take to reflect on whether or not a sex compulsion/OCSB assessment may be right for you.

Sexual compulsion/OCSB self-assessment*

(10 questions to ask yourself)

  1. Do you hide aspects of your sexual activities from your partner?
  2. Do you have sex in places, situations, or with people that are risky and against your better judgement?
  3. Do you find yourself regularly seeking sexually arousing articles or pornographic scenes in magazines, online, or other media?
  4. Do you find that romantic or sexual fantasies interfere with your relationships?
  5. Do you often feel shame or remorse after a sexual encounter?
  6. Do you find it takes more and more for you to be sexually aroused and/or to climax? (For example, frequency of sexual activity, variety, or more extreme acts)
  7. Have you ever been arrested or are you in danger of being arrested because of your practices of voyeurism, exhibitionism, prostitution, sex with minors, indecent phone calls, etc.?
  8. Do your sexual activities or beliefs conflict with your religious or spiritual beliefs?
  9. Do your sexual activities include the risk, threat, or reality of disease, pregnancy, coercion, or violence?
  10. Has your sexual or romantic behavior ever left you feeling hopeless, alienated from others, or suicidal?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, it may be time to seek help.

The assessment process

There are several methods used alone or in combination for this type of assessment including:

  • Standard interviewing of the client
  • Background information review
  • Psychological tests
    • Questionnaires
    • In-person testing
    • Other tests as determined by the psychologist (for example, intelligence tests)

Depending on the methods used, the amount of time for this assessment to be completed can vary. In general, the process from start to finish is about 5-7 hours and involves the client for about 2-3 of those hours.
