Formal assessments can help to identify your strengths and weaknesses and provide a clearer path forward for your mental health care. Insight’s trained therapists provide assessments that assist individuals of all ages to improve their lives. Assessments are helpful in identifying your levels of symptoms objectively. While assessments can vary from individual to individual, most times they include testing, interviews, observation, and consultation with one of Insight’s trained professionals. Many of these assessments can be done as part of therapy but some may require a higher level of formality depending on the level of need and purpose of the assessment.
Insight offers a wide range of intelligence, educational capacity, aptitude, and memory testing at our Edmonton and Calgary locations.
What is a psychoeducational assessment?
For thousands of years, we’ve been interested in our level of intelligence. A psychoeducational assessment is a score derived from one of several different standardized tests that measures intelligence, memory, academic skills, and overall aptitude.
A psychoeducational assessment consists of a series of tests related to psychological aspects of learning and academic skills such as:
- Verbal and visual learning
- Attention and concentration
- Language skills
- Impulsive response style
- Memory
- Spelling
- Writing
- Oral expressive skills
- Mathematics
- Reading (sight vocabulary, phonetic skills, and reading comprehension)
- Memory assessments
Why is the assessment used?
Psychoeducational assessments will confirm the presence of an intellectual issue, academic issue or delay, or learning disorder, allowing you to get help and explore further available support or funding. If there does not appear to be a disorder present, this is still helpful knowledge in that you can move forward in addressing what is causing the issue that you or your child are experiencing.
The assessment process
- Extensive multi-dimensional testing, results, interpretation, and recommendations tailored to the specific needs of each client
- On-site consultation and testing is available
